Alignment with Breakfast: Leah's Go-to Green Smoothie

smoothie_beforeOne of the easiest ways you can cultivate more energy in your body and life is through what you eat. Every time you eat you have the opportunity to practice alignment with your bigger intentions in life, or your True North. Food is fuel for your body and mind, and everything we eat carries a unique energy that creates either expansion or contraction of life force. Life force is vital energy, or in Yoga we call it prana. By adding in more real foods and specifically more green foods, like in a green smoothie in the morning for breakfast, you are taking in this raw earth energy and more fuel for your life.

In Yoga, we look to the elements in nature (earth, water, fire, air and space) to cultivate alignment in our physical practice. When we mirror nature in our eating and lifestyle choices we get access to more of this vital energy too. A tree will alway bend toward the sun light. When you add real foods such as leafy greens to your diet, you harness the power of the sun and naturally create expansion and fuel your own growth. 

Every morning we have a blank canvas which makes breakfast an incredible opportunity to align, energize and add-in more earth energy.  Here is the recipe for my go-to green smoothie that I use to start my day. I like to eat light in the mornings, especially before a big practice, and smoothies are already broken-down so they’re easy to digest and assimilate. The less energy we use for digestion, the more energy we have available to use and show up in all areas of life.

Leah's Green Smoothie

  • 2-3 pieces of kale (without stems)
  • 1 handful of spinach (or other greens)
  • Coconut water
  • 1-inch fresh ginger
  • 1/3 cup frozen blueberries
  • 4 strawberries
  • 1/2 frozen banana or 1/2 of avocado 
  • 1 packet/scoop of Amazing Grass Powder (I always travel with these!)

I like to blend the greens, coconut water and fresh ginger first to make sure that they’re broken down and I’m not getting big chunks in my smoothie. Kale, spinach or both are usually my greens base. These and other greens provide vital nutrients and minerals, strengthen your blood and respiratory systems, and promote healthy digestion. Incorporating dark leafy greens into the diet is essential to establishing a healthy body and immune system. Green in nature is the color of new life and renewal, so when you eat greens you are taking in this life-affirming energy! Fresh ginger has incredible medicinal properties. It’s commonly used to aid all sort of digestive issues, stoke metabolic fire, and it’s anti-bacterial and immunity boosting. When you feel good and healthy, you have access to more energy. The coconut water is hydrating with natural electrolytes, which is essential when you are practicing sweaty yoga.

Expand your practice of alignment to your plate. Just like a tree harnesses the light energy of the sun, by adding in more greens and real foods to your practice of eating you will create more alignment, more energy and fuel your own expansion. Try adding in a green smoothie today!
